Frequent Sinus Sufferers: 5 Tips to Relieve Your Discomfort

Women Feeling Unwell And Sinus
If you suffer from chronic sinusitis, you probably have recurring or frequent bouts of sinus pressure, pain and congestion. It is a good idea to see your physician for an evaluation and treatment plan. In addition, you can combat the effects of sinusitis in several ways. Knowing how to avoid triggers that make your symptoms worse is an important measure to take.
Here is what you can do to help relieve your sinus misery.

1. Recognize the Symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis

In many cases, sinus problems are contributed to allergies or respiratory infections. Individuals with nasal polyps may be prone to developing chronic sinusitis as well. Polyps are small, benign growths that may interfere with proper drainage. While your doctor can provide a proper diagnosis, look for the following if you believe you have chronic sinusitis.vvv
  • Pressure along the sinus cavities. Facial pressure, often located around the sockets of the eyes, along the forehead or across the bridge of the nose, is one of the more pronounced symptoms of sinusitis.
  • Post nasal drip or drainage of mucus. If you experience thickening mucus that accumulates in the back of your throat, this is another symptom of sinusitis.
  • Facial pain or tenderness. Some individuals also experience a dull ache in the jaw or in the teeth.
It may be difficult to distinguish these symptoms from that of another medical condition, so visit the doctor, who can evaluate your case.

2. Take Medication

With your doctor's approval, you might try over-the-counter medications to ease your symptoms. A decongestant may help to drain your sinuses and provide relief from nasal congestion often associated with sinus issues. Keep in mind that decongestants may not be suitable for some individuals with existing health problems. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help relieve sinus headaches.

3. Flush Your Sinuses

Nasal irrigation, with the use of sterile water and salt, may help flush out mucus from your sinus cavities. This method is used to bring relief of sinus pressure and congestion. To flush your sinuses, you might want to buy a neti-pot kit at your local pharmacy.
The neti pot resembles a teapot with an elongated spout. After filling the pot with the saltwater solution, you place the spout into your nostril while tilting your head sideways so the liquid and mucus drains out from the opposite nostril. Repeat this method with the other nostril as well. Read directions carefully before you begin.
Alternatively, you might use a nasal saline spray. This is purified saltwater solution that you spray into your nostril. Because a saline nasal spray is drug-free, you can use it as often as necessary.

4. Try Using Essential Oil

Essentials oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint, which has natural menthol, may bring you some relief. Add peppermint oil to heated water so you may breathe in the soothing vapors. However, this method may be too strong for some individuals. For a gentler approach, use a diffuser, which will release the oils into the air and help you breathe easier.
Think of essential oils as being an aromatherapy. For a different method, you might add a few drops to your bathwater to help you relax as it eases your congestion.

5. Raise the Humidity in Your Home

If the air tends to be dry in your home, use a humidifier, especially at night. This may help you breathe easier. Be sure to keep your humidifier clean and disinfected to avoid the growth of bacteria and mold.
If you experience fever or your condition worsens, see your health care professional for advice. Also, if you have a pre-existing health condition, do not take medications without checking with your doctor first.
